SANTA LUCIA HILL
The city of Santiago was founded atop this hill in 1541 by the Spanish and became their defense fortress. Today it is an urban park located in the heart of the city.

SANTIAGO DAY TRIPS:
CAJON DE MAIPO
We enjoyed a Christmas Eve hike in the Andes, an hour southeast of Santiago














POMAIRE
We enjoyed this small town of pottery artisans one hour west of Santiago












VALPARAISO
We visited our favorite grandpas at the Salvation Army Hogar in Valparaiso. They enjoyed our Christmas carols and the small gifts our grandchildren gave them.




ZAPALLAR BEACH
This beautiful beach lies on a small bay, enveloped by surrounding mountains and a magnificent rocky coastline. The crystal-clear water and fishing boats provided a charming scene.












THE GRISWALDS HEAD SOUTH TO THE LAKE DISTRICT







PUERTO VARAS
Located on the shore of Llanquihue Lake this charming city offers impressive views of the Calbuco and Osorno Volcanos.





DAY TRIP AROUND LAKE LLANQUIHUE:
SALTO DE PETROHUE
These chute waterfalls are magnificent, and we had a chance fox sighting.







TODAS LOS SANTOS LAKE
We enjoyed a boat ride in the Andes on Todas los Santos Lake



OSORNO VOLCANO
The views from the top were stunning. And the lupine was so beautiful!




PUERTO OCTAY
We enjoyed a German lunch with a perfect view of the Osorno volcano




FRUTILLAR
German style wooden buildings are characteristic of the city and reflect its colonial past.






DAY TRIP TO THE ISLAND OF CHILOE






PENGUINS ON PUÑIHUIL BEACH
Between November and March three islands at Puñihuil are populated by Humboldt and Magellanic penguins. It was amazing to see them in their natural habitat. We also saw sea lions, cormorants, and many other sea birds. We climbed aboard a cart and were pushed into the water so we could board the boat.









ANCUD
Ancud was founded in 1769 as a fortress city it was repeatedly attacked during Chile’s war for independence. It remained the last stronghold of the Spaniards in the Americas and the seat of their government in exile after fleeing from Santiago.






Words cannot express the joy of being together. We enjoyed each precious moment with those we love the most
BRINGING IN THE NEW YEAR CHILEAN STYLE
We were invited to share a traditional Chilean New Year’s Eve with The Ramirez family which consisted of an elegant dinner at 10:00pm and a countdown to 2023. The whole neighborhood was full of music, dancing, and exuberant wishes for a feliz año nuevo. We send our love and wish you all the same.
