ESCUELA EQUIPOS, ÉLDERS, VISITANTE ESPECIAL, ESPAÑOL Y ESTRELLA DE MAR

ESCUELA EQUIPOS

We had two school kits assembly projects this week. One was in Rancagua, a city one hour south of Santiago (445 kits).

And one with our own Pocuro ward members here in Santiago (570 kits).

ÉLDERS

We had a special treat in Rancagua. Hermana Lamb’s cousin, Sharon Udy Storrs, has a grandson serving a mission there. We were able to take him and his companion out for lunch while we were in town. He arrived in Chile two weeks ago. Elder and Hermana Salgado traveled with us to Rancagua.

VISITANTE ESPECIAL

Elder Craig C. Christiansen, South America South Area President, stopped by our office on Friday to introduce himself. He is in Chile visiting for the next 10 days. He serves in the area office in Buenos Aries, Argentina.

ESPAÑOL

Hermana Lamb speaking: I just had my last Spanish tutoring class with my MTC (Missionary Training Center) tutor. The church provides a language tutor for senior missionaries as soon as they receive their mission call that lasts six months into the field. I had two different tutors during the last year. They both were great and taught me so much. They really pushed me and encouraged me at the same time. I was able to have this tutoring through the MTC for almost a year. It was a great blessing. My goal is to study Spanish for 30 minutes a day, five days a week. My tutors last words to me were an encouraging promise that I would come to love this beautiful language. I am hopeful and determined.

ESTRELLA DE MAR

It was a week with long office hours working through details of many projects and planning our itineraries for our next two weeks of travel. We will be going back into the office today (Saturday) because there are things we must do before leaving town tomorrow. It feels like there are not enough hours in the day to accomplish all we need to do. With so much need in the world sometimes we wonder if we are making a difference and then we remember the Starfish story.

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so he walked faster to catch up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”

“I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?” asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up, and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, “It made a difference for that one.”
